If you’ve ever overloaded your skin with too many actives at once and ended up with irritation instead of glow — we feel you. Enter skin cycling, the viral skincare method that’s all about balance, not burnout.
Coined by Dr Whitney Bowe, a New York-based dermatologist, skin cycling is a structured nighttime skincare routine that rotates potent ingredients across several days to give your skin the actives it needs without overwhelming it.
Let’s break it down step by step — and highlight the five essential product types you need to cycle your way to glowing, healthy skin.
How Skin Cycling Works (4-Night Cycle)
Night 1: Exfoliation
This is the night you slough off dead skin cells to allow better product penetration and boost cell turnover.
What to use: A chemical exfoliant with AHAs (like glycolic or lactic acid) or BHAs (like salicylic acid).

For example, we like COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid – great for beginners and gentle enough for most skin types. Use it like a toner for your T-zone and leave it for 20 minutes to boost up the effects.
If you’re afraid that your skin might be a little too sensitive to the acids, then perhaps you may want to try a more physical exfoliator such as an exfoliating gel. However, we do not recommend scrubs with broken shells or seeds/ fruit stones as these will cause micro tears on your skin and will cause more harm than good.
Night 2: Retinoid Night
Now that your skin is prepped, it’s time for your active — retinoid or retinol. This step boosts collagen, reduces fine lines, and smooths skin texture.
What to use: A retinol or retinaldehyde serum depending on your experience level.

We like The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane as it is very affordable and works great for those who are a bit budget conscious. Do note that this is for those who are a little more advanced. If you’re just trying out retinoids, then go for a lower percentage of about 0.5% instead.
Nights 3 & 4: Recovery Nights
No actives. Just hydrate, repair, and nourish. These are crucial for maintaining your skin barrier and reducing the risk of irritation.
What to use: A gentle cleanser, barrier-repair moisturiser, and possibly a soothing serum.

For example, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 – a cult-fave for healing and hydration. Remember to stop using the BHA or AHA toner and just stick to moisturising or neutral ones.
Morning Routine (Every Day!)
Don’t forget your SPF — especially when using exfoliants and retinoids.
What to use: A broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

We love Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50+ because it is lightweight, non-greasy, and perfect for SG humidity.
Bonus: A Nourishing Cleanser (Every Night)
A non-stripping cleanser sets the stage for every step in your cycle.

For example, CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser – fragrance-free, ceramide-rich, and ideal for all skin types.
Tips to Maximise Your Skin Cycling Results
Always patch test new products.
If you’re new to retinoids, start with once a week and work up to the 4-night cycle.
Adjust the cycle to your skin’s needs — some go for a 3-night cycle, others need more recovery time.
Avoid combining exfoliants and retinoids on the same night (your skin will thank you!).
Skin cycling is more than just a TikTok trend — it’s a science-backed, sustainable approach to skincare. With the right products and a bit of patience, you’ll unlock your healthiest, glowiest skin yet.
